Charleston drivers know hurricane season brings more than just heavy rain — it can mean flooding, falling debris, and costly vehicle damage. The good news? A few preventive steps can make all the difference in protecting your car before, during, and after a storm.
Here’s your Charleston driver’s guide to keeping your vehicle safe this hurricane season, courtesy of Better Collision.
1. Park on Higher Ground (and Avoid Trees)
Floodwater is one of the biggest causes of storm-related vehicle loss. Whenever possible, park your car on high ground or inside a garage — and never near large trees or power lines.
If you live in a flood-prone area, consider temporary relocation to a friend’s or relative’s driveway on elevated ground before a major storm hits.
2. Seal and Protect Your Vehicle
Before the storm, make sure all windows, doors, and sunroofs are tightly closed and sealed. Applying a silicone-based protectant around rubber seals helps prevent leaks from wind-driven rain.
Cover your car with a waterproof, breathable car cover to guard against debris, hail, and paint damage.
3. Disconnect or Protect Your Battery
If your vehicle might be exposed to flooding, disconnect the battery to reduce electrical system damage. If the car is in a garage, cover the battery terminals with plastic wrap or a waterproof bag to prevent corrosion or short-circuiting.
4. Don’t Drive Through Flooded Roads
It’s tempting to “just get through it,” but even six inches of moving water can stall or sweep a vehicle. Saltwater especially wreaks havoc on wiring, sensors, and undercarriage components.
If you suspect your vehicle took in water, don’t start it. Have it towed to Better Collision for inspection — starting a flooded engine can cause permanent internal damage.
5. Document and Report Any Damage Early
If your vehicle sustains storm damage, take clear photos of the exterior and interior before moving it. Notify your insurance company immediately and request a certified inspection.
Better Collision’s team works directly with insurers to document and assess flood or impact damage, ensuring you get accurate repair coverage.
6. Clean and Inspect After the Storm
Even if your car looks fine, salt, mud, and debris can corrode vital parts over time. Wash your vehicle thoroughly — including the undercarriage — and check for signs of moisture inside headlights, taillights, or carpeting.
Our technicians can perform a post-storm safety check to ensure your brakes, wiring, and frame haven’t been compromised.
